ABOUT PHIL HAWKINS
You can tell Phil Hawkins was one of those weird, driven kids who directed their first short film as a kid. The work is quirky and maybe a little slapstick at times. When comedy ranks as one of the most successful genres in advertising, Phil is a real find for Australia. He is prolific and rolls out a range of work for numerous advertising agencies brands across the world and has become known for being a very versatile director. His passion is in storytelling and performance and has worked with kids, cars, comedy, crocodiles and everything in-between for national and international brands such as Sony PSP, Nike, Microsoft, Jet2, Teleflorist, Vauxhall, Sol, Bavaria and many more. There are so many brilliant commercials to choose from his library, we can only feature very few here. With ten years of directing under his belt he’s directed over one hundred TVC’s.
After writing and directing a short film for the BBC (aged 16), he fell into the commercials industry. Starting as a runner (he apparently still makes a mean cup of tea) he worked through the ranks from VT Op, Camera Assistant, 3rd Assistant Director, 1st AD, a diversion into being an assistant editor then editor of ads and then, finally, had the opportunity to direct a low budget commercial. It won a Roses Advertising Award (the first of many).
